NEW Documentary Photography

Spring

Documentary photographers aim at exploring and recording human experience, often telling a story through images. Documentary photographers must also master both the technical aspects of photography and the ethical and artistic sides. Develop your own personal approach through composition, lighting, selecting,
editing, and juxtaposing images in a documentary photo essay.

Photographing Central Park

Make Central Park your studio. Spend a portion of each class photographing on location; then share your work during group critiques and discussions. Weekly assignments are completed between classes. Any type of camera may be used.

Share your work and receive feedback to advance you to the next level in your photography. You will also learn and share with other attendees. NYC Through Your Lens

Spring

Winter is finally over! Take your camera and let’s go. NYC will be your cityscape. Each week we will choose a different area to photograph. Students will learn how to approach a subject or place and how to use light to their advantage while starting to develop their own personal approach and style. They will gain an understanding of what makes a photograph successful technically and compositionally.

Sessions will include a combination of question and answer, on location photography shoots, slideshows of photographers, assignment reviews, demonstrations, and discussions. The final class we will view class work and discuss presentation methods.

Portraiture

Spring

Capture the essence of your subject while learning the important elements involved in creating beautiful portraits. Lighting, posing, gesture, props, location choices will be covered. You will learn how to use both natural and studio lighting to light your subject. Leave the class with the ability to use light to create portraits you envision. With this knowledge you will be able to enter a variety of lighting situations and be successful. Classes will take place both indoors and outdoors.

Summer Photography Intensive

Enjoy a variety of fun adventures both at the JCC and on outings while learning how to use your 35mm digital SLR camera. NYC will be your landscape to practice new photography techniques with your instructor. Use the JCC digital lab to download and retouch your digital photos. View the work of well-known photographers during in-class instruction and on a trip to a museum or gallery. Gain skills to compose and light your photos more effectively. Use studio lights to create a staged picture with your classmates and at the end leave the class with a portfolio of work to show friends and family. A digital camera with manual settings is necessary.
