I want to introduce you to an organization called Now I Lay Me down to Sleep. There mission statement begins… To introduce remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with the free gift of professional portraiture. We believe these images serve as an important step in the family’s healing process by honoring their child’s legacy.

This week I was asked to photograph a still born baby baby boy for a family. He was full term and his death was completely unexpected and unexplained. Witnessing the baby and mother was beyond heartbreaking; Devastating may be an understatement. Having an infant at home, I was quickly reminded me that I was lying in a maternity ward not that long ago with my own baby and how precious that little life is.

Even without a newborn at home, there is something utterly ruthless and completely wrong about losing a child. It goes against the nature of things… and the “normal” life cycle, and gives the word grieving new meaning. Focusing on shooting the photos helped to keep my mind off what was staring me in the face. As I was finishing the photo shoot, the mother thanked me. My heart broke again, but for a moment, I found slight comfort in the fact that the family wanted these photos and I could provide them images to commemorate their baby boy.

I ask photographers that are interested in providing this service to families to please contact NILMDTS. They really need volunteers and they are an incredible organization.
